Matthew 6: 9-13
9 “This, then, is how you should pray:
“‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’
Matthew 6: 25-33
Do not worry
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[a]?
28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labour or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendour was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Notes
- We must get better at understanding on what basis we’re coming to God in prayer. Why are we asking this?
- If you ask something and God knows it’s not for your good, he won’t give it
- Dear dad prayers
- Food for the Road prayers
Prayer Tips:
1. The first place to start is to be honest with God- no need to use spiritual language. Come and ask Him what we need
2. Start by asking the need before jumping to the solution. Sometimes we skip to the thing we think is the answer. God provides in different ways.
3. Try and pray specific prayers- prayers concrete enough that you would know if they were answered. Sometimes he puts it into our hearts what the answer will be.
4. Hierarchical or option prayers. This is what the problem is, this is what I need. Be specific. Or bring options to God. We would love this to work, but if not, please may this be the case.
5. Try and tell God on what basis you’re asking this. This is the kind of God you are, so I’m going to ask for this
6. Be persistent. Repetition is vital in prayer. Ask, seek, knock. Keep going.
7. Wrestle with God when your prayers aren’t answered. Sometimes this isn’t good to do, for example when we don’t let go of something that needs letting go. But we give up way too easily. It’s good to come before the Lord and ask, why? Was it me? Was it wrong motives?
8. Keep a record of your prayers. Then you can look back and see what he’s answered
9. Use answered prayers to fuel unanswered ones
- We can pray for anything, but we are particularly called to pray for bread for the road, for kingdom matters. We can say, ‘Lord this is your kingdom, your matters, please provide’
